We are currently recruiting for an experienced Assistant Plant Manager – Aggregates and Asphalt to join and lead our friendly operations team at our Tarmac Barrasford Quarry and Asphalt Plant, Hexham, Northumberland. This role is easily accessible from Hexham as well as Haltwhistle, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Shields, Consett, Morpeth and the surrounding areas.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Assistant Plant Manager – Aggregates and Asphalt will be responsible for managing and be accountable for all quarrying operations on the site while also providing assistance to the Asphalt plant as well. Safety and operational standards are the fundamentals of the role with cost control, people management, delivery to customer needs and performance improvement being key. Managing plant compliance with business policies and procedures and ensuring that legislative compliance is also a strong aspect of the role.

As Assistant Plant Manager – Aggregates and Asphalt you will also be responsible for:

  • Managing, coaching and developing a highly skilled, fit for purpose and extremely motivated team to ensure business continuity and reduce business risk
  • Leading change and continuous improvement initiatives, whilst maintaining disciplined stock management processes and producing operational reports
  • Understand different methods of winning and extracting raw material
  • Knowledge of techniques employed to load extracted minerals and viable options to transport extracted minerals and its applications within the industry, including feeding, crushing, screening, washing, separation, classification and beneficiation techniques
  • Understanding Quarry Regulations 1999 enabling a Reg 8.1d appointment
  • All aspects of budgetary control for all quarrying operations
  • Maintaining and implementing existing and new, Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and training your staff on the same
  • Managing and overseeing the safe operation of the plant and the planned preventative maintenance of all of the site’s equipment fixed and mobile with responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues and business partners
  • Reporting and investigating any unsafe or hazardous working practices
  • Issuing of safety briefings and toolbox talks to your operational team
  • Managing proactively both mandatory training and developmental training of your staff and keep an up-to-date training matrix
  • Collating and report on monthly performance KPI for your business unit for the Area Operations Managing and driving operational performance through KPI’s
  • Ensuring appropriate Contractor and visitor inductions are carried out in line with company procedures

Key Stakeholders you will liaise with in the role of Assistant Plant Manager – Aggregates and Asphalt:

Operations Manager – Health & Safety team – Procurement and support teams – National Logistics team – Area Operations teams – Area Commercial teams – Area HR Manager – Industry Bodies – Customers

This role is a Days role Monday to Friday, but flexibility is key to this role with the expectation to be available to meet with our plant’s operational and customer needs as well.

 

To be successful in the role of Assistant Plant Manager – Aggregates and Asphalt you will ideally have experience and knowledge of:

  • Diploma in Quarry Technology/FdSc Extractives Technology
  • SHE NVQ Level 4/QCF Level 6
  • Highly experienced in Quarrying Operations/Asphalt operations
  • IOSH/NEBOSH would be advantageous
  • Full knowledge of Risk Assessments and Safe System of Work Systems
  • Working knowledge of production processes, H&S and Environmental policies
  • Strong IT skills including a high level of competence with SAP and the Microsoft packages – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to multitask and manage change
