Overview

Job Description

Renishaw’s CMM and Gauging Products Division currently has a vacancy for a software engineer to develop and maintain software-based algorithms for controlling the EquatorTM gauge machinery that performs high-speed, high-accuracy data acquisition. Our customers rely on the equipment as an integral part of the quality-assurance element of their manufacturing processes.

The role would suit an engineer with an interest in automation, mechatronics or robotics who also has software skills, or a computer scientist who has interests in such engineering disciplines. Through on-the-job training and experience, the successful candidate will gain knowledge of the principles of operation of Renishaw’s sensors and actuators, and will use that knowledge to design innovative algorithms, implement them in real time software, maintain them, and see them used by the company’s customers worldwide.

Location & hybrid working

We operate a hybrid policy which allows most employees to work from home for large parts of the week. As a business, we are continuously involved with R&D for new products so, from time to time, there may be an additional need to attend site to carry out certain tasks during key phases of projects. The expectation is that this role requires on site working 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Develop real-time software to control automatic machinery and acquire data from associated sensors. Optimise the software to achieve cutting-edge system performance.

  • Understand existing algorithms and how they influence system performance, and make improvements where necessary.

  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams developing new sensors and actuators to optimise the partitioning of designs between hardware and software. Develop software to interface to such devices, and develop new algorithms to make best use of them.

  • Write and maintain tests to confirm the correct operation of the software.

  • Write design documentation of a high standard.

  • Liaise with application engineers and product-support engineers to maintain an awareness of the in-field use of our products, and use that knowledge to diagnose and fix issues, and to propose innovative approaches to customer needs.

Key requirements

  • A degree in engineering, computer science or a related discipline.

  • A genuine desire to write high-quality software for use in an engineering environment.

  • Experience of writing real-time software in a high-level language.

  • A genuine interest in developing and using your knowledge to solve problems in an innovative way.

  • The ability to work in a team and to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience of writing software in both C and C++.

  • An understanding of real-time operating systems.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft’s component object model.

  • A track record of writing object-oriented real-time code.

  • An established interest in writing software for automation, mechatronics or robotics applications.

  • A clear understanding of the role of design in software engineering.

  • Abilities in mathematics.

  • An understanding of electronics and mechanical engineering.

  • An understanding of software-development processes such as change management and version control.

Person specification

The role requires someone who can work well in a team, sharing responsibilities and communicating clearly. Success in the role will require self-motivation, enthusiasm, clear thinking, willingness to own tasks, ability to work quickly and accurately, attention to detail, as well as the ability and willingness to learn.
