The service you will work in….

We are excited to launch this new service, which involves working alongside the Central and North West London (CNWL) NHS Foundation Trust’s Single Point of Access (SPA). The Single Point of Access is a streamlined and centralised entry point into mental health services in CNWL. Our service provides urgent mental health support, advice and signposting for patients and potential users of CNWL mental health and learning disability services, their carers and relatives; also, GPs, police, London Ambulance Service and the 111 Service. This role would be based in The Gordon Hospital in Westminster.

This role has been introduced follow the “Right Care Right Person initiative” instigated by the Metropolitan Police. This is therefore a pilot project with initial funding until November 2023.

A day in this role looks like….

As a Recovery Worker at Hestia, you will play a crucial role in our Mental Health and Complex Needs service. Your contributions will directly influence the lives of our service users, guiding them towards a path of empowerment and independence.

A day will never look the same and some of the things you can expect to do/be responsible for are:

  • Use a Trauma-Informed, non-judgmental and person-centred approach, demonstrating active listening skills and empathy, and using validating statements/language to manage service users in crisis over the phone.
  • Support callers to access secondary adult and children and young people mental health services
  • De-Escalate those calling in mental health distress
  • Assess levels of risk around areas of suicide and self-harm, and if appropriate escalate to clinical staff.
  • Effectively introduce/signpost callers to appropriate services, activities, or sources of support.
  • Participate in the core work of the service, providing support to colleagues, carrying out tasks allocated by the service manager and using initiative to identify and deal with additional tasks as they arise. ​
  • Ensure that administration is done in good time; that detailed, concise and accurate records are created contemporaneously, and that confidentiality is appropriately maintained. ​
  • Be conversant with current SPA processes and operational documents, escalating to clinical staff in SPA where there an issue arises that is beyond their expertise.

We are looking for candidates who bring a combination of passion, expertise, and dedication to the table. To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • Knowledge of issues affecting those individuals with a range of mental health conditions including crisis management, how to communicate effectively with these individuals and how to support them with dignity and respect.​
  • Knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation i.e. Care Program Approach (CPA) processes.​
  • Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches.​
  • Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers.​
  • Ability to work Monday to Sunday 13:00 to 22:00, including working bank holidays.​
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.​
  • Demonstrable experience of working with individuals who have experienced mental health and/or dual diagnosis issues.
  • Good IT skills that including a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Outlook and the internet.​ Knowledge of using SystmOne is desirable.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills, able to produce clear written correspondence in hard copy or email.​
