We’re currently recruiting for a Radiation Protection Engineer at Dungeness B Power Station, responsible for delivering the required standards and processes in Radiological Protection, Radioactive Waste Management and Environmental Protection.

In this role you’ll be monitoring and executing the required Radiological Protection Standards to support the safe, reliable operation and progression into defueling of the station. Your focus will be on operational radiological protection and following suitable training and development you’ll be expected to take on the roles of Accredited Health Physicist and Accredited Radioactive Waste Engineer.

You’ll be required by the Company to undertake a role in the emergency scheme leading to that of Emergency Scheme Health Physicist. This will necessitate you being on a standby rota and requires that you live within a 45-minute drive of the Station.

We can offer a competitive salary from £37,080 – £79,619 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing

As an Accredited Health Physicist/Accredited Radiological Waste Engineer, you’ll be responsible for implementing the relevant company standards at Dungeness B. This will include ensuring the correct controls are in place to minimise radiation dose to workers and radiological discharges. In addition, you will be responsible for:

  • Provision of authoritative advice to the Station on all aspects of Radiological Protection
  • Interactions with and compliance reporting to Regulators
  • Liaison with peers within EDF to share best practice and strive to continually improve local and fleet radiological performance
  • Managing specifications, work instructions and other control documents to ensure radiological safety
  • Contributing to the development and delivery of training/communication programmes relating to Radiological Protection and Radioactive Waste Management
  • Taking an active part in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of team business plans
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Taking a timely approach and appropriate action, recognising/considering the implications of decisions, particularly relating to radiological safety and radioactive discharges.

Who you are

As a minimum, you’ll have a relevant HNC (or equivalent) and a relevant Degree may be advantageous. You’ll need experience in Radiological Protection such as; instrumentation, dosimetry, dose control, contamination control, dose assessment, Radiation Risk Assessments and the ALARP principle. Knowledge of statutory legislation relevant to Radiological Protection, Nuclear Site Licence requirements and Emergency Plan arrangements would also be desirable. 

Effective team values and influencing styles in achieving personal and team goals, building effective cross-functional relationships and team working at all levels is paramount. Also key will be working to high standards of nuclear, personal, environmental, radiological and industrial safety, with the ability to make sound decisions and communicate those decisions. The ability to pay attention to detail, applying a questioning attitude to verbal, numerical and written information is also important in this role.

Candidates with one or more of the following may have an advantage:

  • Experience in the provision of Radiological Protection advice or related duties
  • Experience of regulatory engagement and external stakeholder management
  • External qualifications/courses in Radiological Protection
  • Radiological protection background
  • Hold, or be working towards, RPA certification.
