What is the Project Controls Apprenticeship Programme?
Our Project Controls Apprenticeship offers the opportunity to kick-start your career working on some of the most exciting projects for a generation…
During the apprenticeship you’ll work as a Project Controls Engineer based both in the office or with the engineering teams on site, working alongside industry-leading professionals.
You will use your current skills and gain extensive exposure to several different business units. You will work on reporting, analysis and look at trends of data whilst pulling together business plans. Cost, risk and change management are all key parts of this apprenticeship.
Training, development and support for you:
During the course of your apprenticeship, you will work as part of the team based at our Heysham 1 Power Station.
During years 1 and 2, you will also spend time studying at the National College for Nuclear both remotely (weekly day release) and on block release (total of 3 weeks), where you’ll complete assignments within the business which will enable you to consolidate your training.
Over the 3-year training programme you’ll learn to master core processes such as estimating, planning, risk management and cost engineering; whilst applying your knowledge with access to the latest computer systems.
Whilst you’re gaining practical real-world experience, you’ll also be studying for the Level 3 Project Controls Technician standard.

The Future:
At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll move into a permanent role at Heysham 1. Subject to requirements, there will be further opportunities to continue into a degree level apprenticeship, specialise or explore other roles at EDF.
What you’ll need to apply:
• In England & Wales – GCSE Grade A-C in Maths, English and a Science or Technical subject
• In Scotland – National 5s in Maths, English and a Science or Technical subject
• You'll be self-motivated with a desire to learn and develop
• You'll have the ability to work in a team and independently, as well as being able to balance the responsibilities of study and work
