The Role

The Head of Nutrition – Technical and Compliance within Chartwells will be responsible for two main remits: 
  • Medical diets, allergies and intolerances and 
  • Compliance to legislation. 
You will own the medical diet policy and process across all sectors of Chartwells. This includes driving the strategy for the end-to-end medical diet policy and process, keeping thousands of customers with food allergies and intolerances safe on a daily basis.  
You will also ensure the health and wellbeing of all customers is considered at every stage of the offer development process; working as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide guidance and expertise on relevant food legislation and guidelines within the education sector. 
You will be the spokesperson for both remits building relationships both internally and externally to ensure we are continually raising the profile of Chartwells to be seen as subject matter experts and market leading across the food industry. 
You should have excellent relationship building skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
As we enter a period of growth within Chartwells, the candidate must work well under pressure and work independently, at pace. The candidate will have line management responsibility of senior colleagues as well as leading a large team of Medical Diet and Compliance experts. They will report into the Director of Nutrition and Sustainability and support overall business strategy.
The candidate should have held a previous senior position with management responsibilities, preferably with strategy ownership and project/change management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities  

  • Ensuring our robust policies and procedures for both medical diets and compliance are adhered to across the business
  • Ensuring business compliance to relevant food legislation, including but not limited to 
School Food Standards, 
Food Information Regulations, 
Calorie Labelling, 
Natasha Law
 
  • Ensuring Chartwells are aligned with Compass Group best practice commitments and guidelines (e.g., Salt Targets, Sugar Targets, Plant Forward, Food For Life)
  • Supporting the mobilisation of all new contracts within Chartwells with regards to medical diets and compliance
  • Management of Technical and Compliance team, developing team and recognising future talent

Person Specification  

  • Educated to degree level in relevant university degree 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience (foodservice industry would be preferred)
  • Previous experience working in a senior role
  • Experience with managing an effective team
  • Comfortable working under pressure, at pace
  • Strategic thinker with ability to establish a strategy and deliver on key objectives to achieve shared outcomes 
  • Confident in communicating to large groups of people 
  • Ability to control challenging meetings/conversations 
  • Ability to solve problems effectively, remaining resilient in challenging situations 
  • Excellent communication skills, verbally written and interpersonal 
  • Ability to quickly gain credibility with key stakeholder groups
